The local area:  The Lot department  is one of the less well-known parts of France, but it is well worth exploring.  Cahors, the chief  town nestling in a loop of the river Lot, has its origins in Roman times.  It has a lively medieval quarter and a fortified bridge dating from the 14th century.  Downstream to the west, the river meanders through gentle scenery dominated by the vineyards where the famous dark red Cahors wine is produced. East of Cahors, the landscape becomes wilder, with spectacular cliffs tumbling from the dry limestone “causses” to the fertile valley.  Close to St Gery is St Cirq Lapopie, a lovely cliff-top medieval village, the prehistoric cave art of Pech Merle, Cenevieres castle and an open-air museum of rural life.   Riding, fishing, swimming, cycling, tennis, walking, canoeing and other boating activities are available locally.  St Gery  is also an excellent base for excursions to Rocamadour, Figeac, the Dordogne valley, Sarlat, Lascaux, Toulouse (nearest airport 2hrs), the Aveyron Gorges, Albi (cathedral and Toulouse-Lautrec museum) Moissac, Conques and Rodez (Ryan Air flights).
